Fruit:

Botanically, Fruit is a fertilized & developed ovary.
Horticulturally,a fruit can be defined to plant fruits those after ripening eaten as raw rather than cooking.

Importance of Fruits:

Fruitsplay a very important role such as foods ,medicine for many socioeconomic aspects.
Standard of living depends on fruit consumptions.
A.     Dietary importance:
A complete food must contain carbohydrates,proteins,vitamins, minerals&rough or fiber. Horticulture foods are an excellent source of all the essential components of human diet. Mostly 30% of the food consumed in the world is produced in the horticulture sector. Minimum average intake of fruit should be about 75g/person/day but in our country it is 54g/person/day. IN developed countries,people take a good amount of fruits i.e. more than 50kg/person/year(136g/day).
Nutritionalimportance:
Fruit contains almost all type of nutrient components but due to presence of vitamins,minerals&absorbable sugar.fruits as taken raw retain all of these nutrients & body can absorb them easily.
Fruits are rich in vitamin:
Bita-carotene  :papaya,mango,jackfruit,hogplum etc.
B1-(thiamine)  :banana,litchi,date palm etc.
B2-(riboflavin):  papaya,litchi,pineapple,wood apple etc.
Vitamin C             :guava,orange,ber,lemon etc.
Minerals:
Calcium           : date palm, cashewnut etc.
Phosphorus: litchi,banana, pomegranate etc.                                                             
Iron                     : guava,unripe mango,sopata etc.
Carbohydrate:banana,mango, jackfruit,ber etc.
Protein               : jackfruit,cashenut,coconut etc.
Fat                        : avocado,cashenut,coconut etc.
Calorie/unit area:
High calorie obtains from per unit area compare to cereals
In many countries peple takes fruit as staples food jackfruit(Banladesh),durain(Thailand).
Medicinalimportance:
Papaya,emlica,baeletc. Cures night blindness, scurvy, stomach upset respectively.triphola-ayurvedimedicine (emblica,horitoki,baira)
Increased food production:
Per hactore yield of fruit is higher than the others crops.wheat-1.67Mt/ha;banana-17.8;guava-8.7Mt/ha
Increased income  :
Rice/Wheat-15-20000TK/ha;banana-75000TK/ha& mango-100000TK/ha
Employment opportunity through the whole:
Fruit growing involves round the year activity such as nursery management,planting,intercultural  operation,marketing&processing activities.To perform such activities,employment,opportunity increases road the year.
Utilization of fallow land&homestead areas:
Some land remains fallow, cannot be utilization otherwise, roadside, hill slope, bank of pond, barrage, school&office surrounding can be utilized for fruit growing.
Development of fruit industry:
Harvesting period is limited,thus lots of fruits get lost.The can be avoided by establishing processing industry. Processing industry utilized these  fruit to prepare processed product (juice,pickle,jelly etc.).Processed product can be also exported.
 Earing &saving foreign currency:
By exporting fresh &processed fruit we can  earn foreign exchange from other tropical countries ,eg.philippine-banana,mango, to japan.If our fruit production increases ,we do not need import, thus reduce import.
Environmental protection:
By planting more fruit trees ,we can preserve the environmental balance. Fruit plants provide-a.reduces carbon dioxide level,b.shade,c.reduces cyclone effect;d.reduces droughtness;e.reduces soil erosion &encourages bird life &other animals etc.
Others:
Timber source, fuel& used in religious purpose(Hindu religion:fruit&leaves of bael&toloshe leaves).
Lot of fruit trees are suited in “BSMRAU” campus. Many small&big fruit trees are available in campus. Many testy& attractive fruits are also available in campus.
