Papaya
Papaya is a quick growing,typically-stemmed,short lived,large perennial herb. It is available round the year.It is used as fresh fruit while the unripe fruits are commonly used as vegetables  for cooking. In our campus we have been seen some papaya plot.

Present status
The papaya ranks 10th in area & 7thproduction  in Bangladesh.
Nutritive value :
                                  Papaya is very nutritious fruit .The amount of vit-A in papaya is the second highest among the fruits &comes to next to mango.It contains fair quantities of vit-C,some riboflavin &niacin&it is good source  of Ca,P,Fe.It also has medicinal & industrial uses.

Varieties:
The varieties Coimbatore-1,Washington,Solo,Honey Dew etc are well known& commercially grown in many  parts of the world  as well as Bangladesh. BARI papaya-1(shahi) in 1992, which is the only variety in BD.
Harvesting:
The 1st crop of fruits is harvested in 12-14 months after transplanting.

On average, yield of 60-70 t/ha may be grown of papaya. But in the country national average of papaya yield is 42.83.
